Race horses reported for duty during the Civil War. After the war races were held in fields with courses set up for a vast array of breeds. Organized racing did not exist until after the Civil War in 1868 when the American Stud Book was started.
This large painting represents field racing at its earliest, depicting the nervousness of the wild eyed stallion and the anxious riders tightening their hats, all waiting for the shot to start the race. The diagonal and diminishing perspective help to create spatial depth.

Daily Trek to the River

The herds visit to the river was stunning and etherial at the same time. The flow of water in the otherwise quiet surroundings and the occasional blowing or neighing of horses intensified the situation. Horses are a primary interest in painting.

Trio on Yesterday’s Raft

The music was wonderful as the raft floated by during a plein air event. A boat was to be the subject but this trio with rhythm quickly changed that plan for the composition. The canopy and colors worn by the musical group created spectacular reflective images on the water.

Morning Shadows

Watermelon Picnic

Juicy ripe watermelon on a hot summer day is just the best treat of all. The sight of them causes us to remember the seeds and liquid that trickle down off the chin in a sticky slide. The red and green complimentary colors provide the oval rhythms for the composition.
